No One Whispers at Whispering Canyon

The Whispering Canyon Cafe is located in the lobby of the Wilderness Lodge at Walt Disney World. When you are seated, you are greeted by a waiter or waitress who throws napkins all over the table and informs you that if you do not have a napkin, you do not get a drink because the napkin is your coaster. Interesting … At that point, we knew there would be a few antics witnessed while eating, like asking for ketchup and having 30 show up on your table, dropping your fork on the floor and having it replaced by a giant plastic one and, well, you’ll see.

For starters, all of the drinks are served in mason jars which adds to the countrified theme of the restaurant, but if you are feeling extra parched and ask for three too many sodas, you may just get a liter of it in a jumbo mason jar. My cousin made that mistake and was surprisingly served this monstrous libation.

Everyone in our family ordered the Canyon Skillet which starts with Mixed Greens with Apple Vinaigrette, Cole Slaw and Fresh Baked Corn Bread. The corn bread was a little too sweet for my taste, but the cole slaw and salad were both delicious. I got a little glum when they took these away but perked right up when they came over with a bowl full of meat and its friendly fixins. The skillet included Pulled Pork, Smoked Pork Ribs, Beef Brisket, Roasted Chicken, Beans, Corn on the Cob and Mashed Potatoes. TK said that the mashed potatoes were some of the best he has ever had, and he knows his potatoes. (He had mound after mound.) The pulled pork was my favorite. It was moist and chewy with peppery flavoring. The pork ribs were a little too rough for me. I like ribs where the meat falls off the bone and the sauce is thick,  and this wasn’t that. My father enjoyed them though. The chicken was moist and the beef brisket was tasty. They were nothing to write home about but, they filled my plate and my belly. The beans were sweet and had that barbecue smoky flavor and the corn was just corn.

When we left, we were completely stuffed which is good because it was all-you-can-eat and we definitely had our fill.

At the Whispering Canyon Cafe, the personality and the provisions were in abundant supply. As a result, laughter and satisfaction were not far behind.
